Heidelberg

Wednesday was an academic holiday here, and so I, along with several of my friends, went to Heidelberg for a trip arranged through the International Office. Heidelberg is in Baden-Württemberg, southeast of Bonn, and was a 3-hour bus trip. Heidelberg was a GORGEOUS city! It's considered one of the romantic cities of Germany, although the people who wrote about it being such a romantic city were only there for 4 years. We went on a 2 1/2 or 3 hour tour of the city and got to see the castle ruins, as well as a very large wine barrel. We also got to see the University, and go inside the first lecture hall used there. Robert Bunsen (of the Bunsen Burner) was a prominent professor at Heidelberg's university in his time.
After the tour, we split off into our own groups to get food and explore the city. Given that it was a little after 2:00 in the afternoon and we had hardly eaten anything all day, we finished off our food very quickly. While we were at the restaurant, we saw waiters making several (probably at least a dozen) trips to an upstairs part of the restaurant with lots of salads. Naturally, all of us were curious as to what was going on. After the salads were taken up, they started going up with some seriously intense-looking meat dishes. Our first thought was a wedding party, but we never did ask.
After lunch, we went and looked around at some of the shops and other things that Heidelberg had to offer. Although it was sunny for most of the morning, it poured on us shortly after getting finished with lunch. I had brought an umbrella with me, since one can never know how the weather in Germany is going to be, but the others bought umbrellas because it was raining so hard. But all in all, it was a good trip. Heidelberg was a town that I was told I had to visit during my time here, and I'm glad I did.

On Monday, Pfingsten (Pentecost break) starts, so we don't have any classes all week. Then for the Junior Year Program students, the week-long Berlin trip starts a week from Monday. So I don't have any classes for two weeks, and should hopefully have lots of travel pictures for you guys!
